Just when you get the car paid off...
Nov. 30th, 2017 09:26 pmI bought the bright red Kia Soul three years ago, primarily for my son Charlie to drive. I paid it off about six months ago (early). When he got his job, he saved money and bought half of it and paid off the rest weekly. So he just paid me off around Thanksgiving, and next week we were going to take all the paperwork to get the title change to his name.
Ain't gonna happen.
There was a 18-wheeler truck tire in the middle of the interstate. He was driving home early from his night shift job at 4:30 in the morning, and WHOMP! In the dark, going interstate speeds, he never saw it.
He managed to make it to the side of the road and called me, his voice shaking, to tell me what happened. Fortunately he was not hurt, just very badly shaken. But the car. That beautiful red car. The passenger side tire is ripped to shreds, the passenger side door screeches open less than six inches, and radiator fluid was everywhere on the ground. In front of him was a big truck with terrible undercarriage damage with the same issue as Charlie- he never saw it. The highway patrol said it was a no-fault accident and wrote up an accident report. The tow truck arrived and took the poor wounded car away, to await the verdict of the insurance adjuster.
It's going to be something of a miracle if the car isn't totaled- I think it has frame damage. I hope it's not, because it's been a great car, but that's up to the insurance company. In the meantime, Charlie is getting that muscle soreness that happens after any accident like that.
Gahh.
